Andrew Goodwin's Theory.

Reading through Everything Andrew Goodwin’s theory on music video,  about pop music videos  not following the traditional narrative I think is bang on point and have to agree with the many points he makes about pop videos e.g. relying on repetition & the singer being both the narrater and character. Not that I had realised until I read his theory. I started looking into music videos differently and saw exactly what he was on about .

Another point Goodwin's makes is that in most pop videos - the singer often looks directly into the camera - this is an example. (Justin Bieber - Baby)

There are three categories which music videos can full under. 1) ILLUSTRATION - This is where the video tells the story of the lyric. 2) AMPLIFICATION - This is when videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning. 3) DIS JUNCTURE - This is where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyrics.

An example of Illustration -  EMINEM - Mockingbird, we see various different visual links between the imagery and lyrics.

An example of Amplification - BLACK EYED PEAS, we see the question mark throughout the whole video, expanding on this idea of 'where is the love?'
