Laura Mulvey.

Blogging task on Laura Mulvey.

Mulvey’s theory on representation follows the “Male Gaze”. This is the theory that women in music videos are shown in a way that appeals to men – the men look and the women are looked at. This occurs through dismembering – where the different parts of the women’s bodies are shown separately to turn her into more of an object than an actual human e.g. a pair of legs, breasts etc.

Bend over by RDX – in this music video, the artist is singing about “bending over” and dancing. The video clearly shows women provocatively dancing and there are many shots where their rears are dismembered in order to objectify them.
Summertime by Vybz Kartel is a music video singing about summer. The video has a carefree feel to it, although it clearly shows Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze – there are men gambling and watching women who are playing on the beach in bikinis, once again getting dismembered and turned into objects for men to look at, rather than being shown in a positive light.

Extra: A video that is the opposite of Mulvey’s theory.
