Andrew Goodwin’s theory on music videos

Pop videos approach narrative differently from a different angle to novels and films. A few reasons for this is pop videos are built initially around songs; songs do not pose traditional narrative structure. In Pop videos the singer is the narrator and actor, whereas in novels and films the two maybe separate roles. Also the singer sings directly to the camera, to try and involve the viewer at home.
Pop videos have a lot of repetition, certain scenes maybe repeated to match a certain part of the song, E.G a specific dance for the chorus which is repeated.
Although the foundation of the video is the song, the actual video might cause viewing pleasure, so the audience is encouraged to repetitively watch it which therefore promotes the music.

There are three types of relations between songs and videos.
1) Illustration – this is where the video tells the story of the lyric.



2) Amplification – occurs when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.



3) Disjuncture- this is where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyric.



Pop videos also have recognisable features. Women in pop videos are objects of male desire, they are presented in a sexualised manner. (Sex sells!)

This fits into illustration as the lyrics are about having no trust and pain from their childhood the video illustrates by showing the dad leaving and the mother finding it hard to cope causing her pain. “ Because of you learnt to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt.”

The reason why this video fits into disjuncture is because the song lyrics tend to be about love and caring for someone “I’ll take care of you” whereas in the video we see bulls and mountains which have no correlation to the video whatsoever.
