 Changes have been made over the years because of development technology and new strategies of production, distribution and exchange.

Changes in mainstream music

• 1950-1970's they were "the big six"
• Late 90's they were "the big five"
• In 2004 they reduced to just four "big 4": EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner
• Now in 2012 they are the "big three" Universal, Sony and Warner, presently speaking Universal have just bought EMI. 

The number of albums sold dropped by over 100m between 2008 and 2012
