LAURA MULVEY'S ideas on representation

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly"

 Laura Mulvey, 1992.

I have revised Mulvey's quote and put it in my own words .... “Living in a society where women are seen as sex objects it shouldn't be a surprise that the majority of music videos satisfy the male gaze”

Representation of women - 1.       They are seen as merely sex objects and nothing more. Something pleasurable instead of something valuable. This happens to be the case in the majority of RnB, HipHop videos.
Artists such as PITBULL, R.KELLY, FLO-RIDA.AKON, ETC...

Here are just a couple of examples I screen shot from some videos - 50 cent - Candy shop. T-pain -Buy you a drank. Akon - Smack that. I all of these videos I watched it was obvious how the women were portrayed there was a lot of bum&boobs on show.

I think that Laura Mulvey understands the way in which women are portrayed in music videos – in a sexual way. I’d say she thinks women represent exactly what the ‘male gaze’ wants to see.
1.       .........I guess people don’t take that much notice or even offence to it because it so common in today’s society.

another two videos I looked at in more detail were.. FLO-RIDA - WILD ONES AND ALSO SNOOP DOGG- SWEAT.

Flo rida's - WILD ONES video is exactly what Mulvey was talking about. Throughout the video there is constantly a number of girls with barely any clothes on. the camera normally zooms into the stomach area or thighs ( I have tried to screen shot on the left) There is also a lot of sexual dancing in the video on poles. The girls in the clubs are dressed very provocative manner. This video will definitely apeal the 'MALE GAZE'
