Blogging tasks on Carol Vernallis

Blogging tasks on Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis theory on how videos are constructed

The narrative;

  • The video is a visual response to the narrative
  • The video doesn't necessarily have to have an ending, so this makes it less like a story which has a start middle and ending.
  • The structure of the video maybe disjointed. With music videos your free to add random shots and still make it seem good
Editing;

  • Editing may match the beat. So for eg, if there was a fast drum beat, there maybe different quick fire shots to match this.
  • Music videos don't have "continuity" editing, so instead of smooth transitions, you'd have jump cuts
Camera

  • The camera may move in time with beat! The video although doesn't have to be a complete illustration of the lyrics, some things need to be interlinked. So the camera moving with the beat is a great relation between the song and video.

This video is an example of the absence of continuity shots and the replacement of jump cuts.

I've chosen this video to talk about the fact that music video's don't really have an ending, by the end of this video we just see people dancing around, there's no actual "ending" or closure to what we've seen throughout the video.
